“How great is our
God,
Sing with me, how great is our God,
And all will see how great,
How great is our God.”
This chorus was written in 2004 by Chris Tomlin, Jesse
Reeves and Ed Cash, and became a hit quickly. If you’ve been a Christian for
any length of time, you know this great chorus and can sing it from memory.
“How great is our God?” What an opening! The first
line of the chorus pulls you in and you’re hooked. You want to close your eyes
and lift your voice and worship God.
According to Tomlin, when writing the song, “We wanted to
lift high and celebrate the greatness and glory of our God in response to who
He is and all that He has done.” As a result, the lyrics highlight God’s
attributes like His splendor, majesty, power, and holiness in a spirit of
praise. The song marvels at God’s power displayed through creation and His acts
in history.
In response to the awesome portrait of God’s greatness, the
chorus issues a call to wholehearted praise. Raising a banner of worshipful
proclamation, the lyrics urge, “My heart will sing / How great is our God!”
Psalm 104 was the psalm that inspired this song. “You our
Lord are very great. You're clothed with splendor and majesty, wrap yourself
with light as with a garment'.” The first verse says:
Biblestudyforyou.com: “As we
reflect on [God’s Greatness], we are reminded of His magnificence in every
aspect of our lives. From His unwavering love and faithfulness to His Almighty
power and wisdom, we see that God is not just great but intimately involved in
our journey . . . In embracing His greatness, we find hope for our struggles,
comfort in our sorrows, and joy in our everyday experiences. Let’s carry these
truths with us, allowing them to transform our hearts and inspire our actions.
Remember, we serve a God who is greater than anything we face.”
How great is our God? He’s the Greatest!
